Why This Election is Critical
The Wisconsin Supreme Court currently has 4 conservative members and 3 progressive members. One of the conservatives is retiring this year. Electing a progressive on April 4th will change the composition of the court and give us the opportunity to get a fair hearing on important issues, such as gerrymandering and the 1849 abortion ban. It could also have a critical impact on voting rights and the selection of electors in the 2024 presidential election.
On Saturday March 18th Team Gold’s afternoon canvass shift was kicked off by Senator Tammy Baldwin, WisDems Chair Ben Wikler, and Jon Favreau and Jon Lovett of Pod Save America. Watch a short video of the event from Channel 3 and hear from our special guests about what is at stake in this election.
Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Janet Protasiewicz is the progressive candidate in this race. Her values are clear. She believes a woman should be able to control her health care, including reproductive choice; access to voting is important; and our electoral maps should be fair. You can learn more about her from her website, https://www.janetforjustice.com/
Her opponent was appointed to the Court by Scott Walker, rejected by Wisconsin voters as too radical in 2020, provided legal counsel to the WisGOP with respect to the Fake Electors Scheme in 2020 and is endorsed by Wisconsin Right to Life. The choice is clear.
Here is an excellent New York Times article from January 25th on what is at stake in Wisconsin and how difficult and costly this race will be. We cannot afford to lose this election! Once again, democracy is on the ballot.
